Graph showing the effect of an anti-inflammatory drug and local anaesthetic treatment on the behavioural response of 3-week old lambs in the three hours after Burdizzo castration

Lambs showed mainly 'statue' standing after Burdizzo castration, with the peak response occurring during the first 30 minutes after treatment, half this initial response occurred for a further 60 minutes.  Local anaesthetic treatment on its own had little effect on the time the lambs spent in abnormal postures.  However, the anti-inflammatory drug on its own effectively reduced the presence of abnormal postures, particularly after the first 12 minutes.  Together both pain-relieving treatments reduced the time spent in abnormal postures, particularly statue standing during the whole of the first 60 minutes after treatment.
