ZAP Research

Background

ZAP Research Our research is focused on the molecular basis of disease and considers it both in terms of the bacterial factors required and the host's response. To integrate these areas the laboratory studies the regulation and value of bacterial determinants using genetic techniques in combination with cell culture, primary tissue culture and an understanding of expression and responses in natural or model hosts.

The ZAP laboratory was initiated from support provided by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, now known by the Scottish Funding Council in concert with a Department of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Subsequently, the grouping has moved to the Centre for Infectious Diseases (CID) at the Chancellor’s Building, University of Edinburgh.

The new set up has state of the art containment level 2 and 3 laboratories. The laboratory is very well equipped for molecular biology and has excellent local microscopy (confocal and electron), tissue culture and array facilities.

The ZAP Laboratory is part of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences within Edinburgh Veterinary School and enjoys productive collaborations with Institutes in and around Edinburgh, including the Moredun Research Institute (MRI), the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) and Roslin Institute (RI).
